A generator connected the wrong way can push power back onto the utility line and kill a lineman. That is the entire reason transfer equipment exists, and it is why this is not a job to improvise. We install it so the two sources physically cannot be connected at once.

Common questions
Can I just use extension cords?
You can, and plenty of people do. A transfer switch means you can run hardwired things like the well pump, the AC and the whole kitchen, and you are not opening a window for a cord.
Do I need a permit?
Yes. This is exactly the kind of work an inspector wants to see, and it is the documentation that protects you if there is ever a claim.
Portable or standby?
Portable plus an interlock is the value answer. Standby is the answer if you work from home, have medical equipment, or simply do not want to go outside in a storm.
